Police appeal for mother of abandoned newborn found in Hackney
The Metropolitan Police has put out an appeal to identify the mother of an abandoned newborn baby found on Saturday.
Baby Edward, as he was named by hospital staff, appeared to have been fed before being left wrapped in a blanket in a visible area.
He is currently being looked after at a hospital in east London where he is reported to be safe and well.
Detectives are urging the mother of the newborn to come forward, emphasising that they are concerned for her own health and intend to offer her medical care.
Detective Sergeant Andy Barry, from Central East Area Safeguarding Unit, said: “I am reaching out to Edward’s mother. You are my primary concern. I do not know the circumstances around Edward’s birth, but as a father myself, I understand how daunting becoming a parent can be. I can offer you help, please be assured that you are not in trouble.”
Specialist units are still searching the area and police are carrying out enquiries and reviewing CCTV footage of the days leading up to the baby’s discovery.
The police are appealing for anyone with information to call 101 quoting Cad 3039/25 Jan or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
